Lil' All Star

I was excited to re-visit this cake... it is one of the first ones you will find on this blog, way back in September 2010.  I LOVED this cake when I made it the first time, and I was happy to make it again!
Stephanie was throwing her baby boy Owen a Braves themed first birthday party, and this cake fit right in!  The first time, I used all fondant to cover the cake. This time, I wanted to try to achieve the same look with buttercream.  I did a few design adjustments, but overall the look is pretty close to the original.
I hope little Owen enjoyed it!  I saw pictures of him enjoying (and destroying!) his smash cake... Happy First Birthday!!!

Top tier chocolate, bottom tier cream cheese pound cake.  Buttercream filling and frosting, fondant accents.
Smash cake is chocolate, also!

Sugar and Spice and Sweet Little Shoes!

I did this cake yesterday for a baby shower thrown by Jeanne (she is a 4-time "repeat customer," which I love!).  They are throwing the party for a mommy-to-be who has 3 sweet little boys and will be adding a sweet little girl soon.  Jeanne requested superpink, supergirly, and a monogram.  Easy enough!
I have been dying to try gumpaste baby shoes for a long, long time, and I ran the design by Jeanne.  She was up for anything... love it when that happens!  I think they turned out just adorable.  I can also do little baby Converse All-Stars for a boy cake variation.
I think we accomplished the "supergirly" vibe on this one!  Congrats to the mommy-to-be!

Lemon cake, fresh raspberry filling.  Buttercream frosting with gumpaste baby shoes and bows.

To Infinity, and Beyond!

SO HAPPY to be "back in business" these days!  My back is 1000% better, and Hubs and I had a fun little weekend getaway for a friend's wedding (and a way-out-of-the-way-but-so-fun trip to Harry Potter World at Universal Studios.  I died!)
This is the most recent cake I made-- for sweet little Collier.  He turned four, such a big boy, and has been asking me for months for a Buzz Lightyear cake.  His mommy, Jill, said, "You know you can just make a sheet cake."
HA!  This little boy's birthday has been the inspiration for a 3D tractor cake, a 3D crane cake, and I knew he needed a 3D Buzz cake!  I looked around for some ideas, and finally went my own way and did an upside down tiered cake for more of a "stylized Buzz" feel. :-)
Seeing his little face when I walked in with his cake just melted my heart.  Happy Birthday, Collier! Can't wait to see what you dream up next year!

This picture just makes my heart melt!  I LOVE WHAT I DO!

Head is rice krispies treats, arms and legs are fondant.

What's the Story, Morning Glory?

So happy with how this turned out!!
This cake was done for a couples baby shower that had a storybook theme.  Emily (for whom I made the guitar luau cake and stylish mommy cake)  had the cutest ideas, such as "Three Little Pigs in a Blanket." We didn't want anything too pastel or babyish, since it was a couples shower...

So I threw out the wacky idea to do a stack of storybooks.  All the little "baby classics" that should be read over and over to wee ones, including the mommy-to-be's favorite, Go, Dog, Go.  Emily was up for it, and I am so glad!  I LOVE how it came out!

6 individual cakes, all sour cream pound cake with buttercream frosting and fondant accents.   Each book has a fondant figure to match-- the car from Go, Dog, Go, a model of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a heart for Guess How Much I Love You, moon and stars from Goodnight Moon, and a falling Humpty Dumpty from Mother Goose.  On top, an open story book with a special message for the couple.

Boo to Back Pain!!

Life continues to improve slowly over here.  I am no longer bed-ridden, moaning and groaning and being a big old baby, but I am definitely not back to 100% yet.  It has saddened me to turn away those who have asked for cakes recently!  To cheer myself up, let's play catch up with some fun ones from the past few months!
